How to Remove Gel Nails Safely at Home

Gel nails look great and last a long time, but removing them can be tricky. If you don’t take care, you might hurt your nails or skin. Here’s a simple and safe way to remove gel nails at home.

What You Need:

  • Nail file
  • Acetone (nail polish remover with acetone)
  • Cotton balls or pads
  • Aluminum foil
  • Cuticle stick or orange wood stick
  • Nail buffer
  • Moisturizer or cuticle oil

Step 1: File the Top Layer
Use a nail file to gently file the shiny top layer of the gel polish. This helps the acetone soak in better.

Step 2: Soak Cotton in Acetone
Dip cotton balls or pads in acetone. Make sure they are wet but not dripping.

Step 3: Wrap Your Nails
Place the acetone-soaked cotton on each nail. Wrap your fingertips in small pieces of aluminum foil to keep the cotton in place.

Step 4: Wait and Relax
Let your nails soak for about 15-20 minutes. The gel polish will start to lift and soften.

Step 5: Remove the Foil and Cotton
Carefully unwrap one nail at a time. Use a cuticle stick to gently push off the gel polish. Do not force it; if it doesn’t come off easily, wrap it again and soak a little longer.

Step 6: Buff Your Nails
Once the gel is off, use a nail buffer to smooth the surface of your nails.

Step 7: Moisturize
Apply moisturizer or cuticle oil to keep your nails and skin healthy and hydrated.

Tips to Keep in Mind

  • Don’t peel or pick at gel nails; it can damage your natural nails.
  • Use gentle motions when pushing off the gel polish.
  • Give your nails a break between gel manicures to stay strong and healthy.

Removing gel nails at home takes some time, but doing it safely helps keep your nails in great shape!
